Community Program Background

Country: Tanzania

Region: Njombe Region

Municipality:  Ludewa District

Community: Manda

Community Based Organization: Manda Water Committee (MWC)

Local NGO Partner: Participatory Development Concern (PADECO)

Local Government Partner (if applicable): Ludewa District Council

Project Type (Community’s first priority project type):Water Supply

Community’s Challenges Description: Among of the community challenges, clean and safe water, electricity supply and education institution specifically primary school are determined to face the area. How ever the case of electricity is in the process op being solved as currently the government is constructing the transmission line from district council town to the community through national grid. In education case, there is one primary school which save the whole community hence some of pupils are supposed to travel from home located far away, about 1-3km  from the school. This reduces the efficiency of education advancement around the community since some of pupils do not attend their studies fully and complete standard seven. The most common challenge to the community is access to adequate, clean and safe water. This have been a problem for years now and the community is still waving out on getting solution. The community only depend water from the lake where they fetch water directly by using buckets and drums. Such water is used for drinking and all other domestic uses. This have been irritative since most of the households and some institutions are located far away from the lake including secondary school, hence people uses much time in fetching water instead of performing other development activities. For students they use almost 2-3hours to fetch water instead of studying hence lowering their academic performance. Thus the highest prior need is water supply system.

Estimated project budget (labor, materials, and equipment): $73,465

*Please note that the estimated budget will likely change based on the scope and does not include travel and logistical expenses.

Number of people in the community: 4450
