International Community Program – Rwanda, Nyamyumba (Unassigned)

Description

International Community Programs (ICP) - Unassigned Program

Chapters interested in starting a new International Community Program (ICP) can apply to adopt an Unassigned Program. All Unassigned Programs have been reviewed and approved by the Application Review Committee (ARC) and therefore, meet our international community partnership criteria.

Community Program Background

Country: Rwanda

Region: Western Province

Municipality:  Rubavu District

Community: Nyamyumba

Community Based Organization: Youth in Action for Development

Local NGO Partner: Hand in Hand for Development (HIHD)

Local Government Partner (if applicable): Cell

Project Type (Community’s first priority project type): Structure (Early Childhood Center)

Community’s Challenges Description: Rubavu city is bordering to Goma city the capital of Nort Kivu in the East of Democratic Republic of Congo. Every morning thousands of people cross the border seeking for jobs other in informal trade. While crossing the border, women traders are obliged to leave their children on the border side for they can’t afford to pay their official documents and there are no centers designed to take care of their children. Further still, these children are left with their siblings who also miss schooling. Children may spend the whole day without being breast fed. The hygiene and sanitation conditions are poor to the point that they easily contract diseases.”Their age range is between three weeks and five years old. They are left on shops verandahs by their mothers as they cross to Congo for business as this is the only way they earn a living”, a migration officer said during minister’s visit at the border. Children are exposed to all kinds of hazards including hunger, rape, and poor upbringing and deprived of their rights such as parental care and education.

Estimated project budget (labor, materials, and equipment): $65,000

*Please note that the estimated budget will likely change based on the scope and does not include travel and logistical expenses.
