International Community Programs (ICP) - Unassigned Program
Chapters interested in starting a new International Community Program (ICP) can apply to adopt an Unassigned Program. All Unassigned Programs have been reviewed and approved by the Application Review Committee (ARC) and therefore, meet our international community partnership criteria.
Community Program Background
Region: Western Province
Municipality: Ngororero District
Community Based Organization: Nyabipfura Water Point Committee (NWPC)
Local NGO Partner: Integrated Development Action (IDA) Rwanda
Local Government Partner (if applicable): Nyabipfura Cell
Project Type (Community’s first priority project type): Sanitation
Community’s Challenges Description: Despite the progress that has been made by Nyabipfura towards access to improved water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, enormous challenges particularly those related to sanitation have persisted in the community. It is estimated that 72% of households across the community rely on unimproved pit latrines whereas 21% have no sanitation facilities at all and practice Open Defecation (OD). This poor access to sanitation facilities as well as unsafe hygiene practices are attributed to high incidence of WASH-related mortality and morbidity in the community as a result of diarrhea diseases. Thus, improving access to sanitation and hygiene facilities becomes the highest priority need to ensure good health, well-being and associated socio-economic development among community residents. Improved access to drinking water is also a high need and might be a proposed second project of this program in the future.
Estimated project budget (labor, materials, and equipment): $58,500
*Please note that the estimated budget will likely change based on the scope and does not include travel and logistical expenses.
Number of people in the community: 5533
