Project Cost $47,000.00 Assessment Cost $0.00 Implementation Cost $0.00 Funds Needed $0.00 Background The community of Corail Lamothe is located in the southeast department (SudEst) of Haiti. The impoverished people of the community must walk daily up to five or six hours roundtrip to obtain clean water. The water comes from a contaminated spring which several thousand Corail Lamothe community members must share with neighboring communities. Haiti is considered the poorest country in the western hemisphere, with 80 percent of the population living below poverty level, and is in desperate need of a clean, safe water supply to meet the daily needs of the country’s families and children. EWB-SCFL is partnering with the non-governmental organization HERO (Health and Education Relief Organization), which is dedicated to helping the children and families of Haiti. | The NeedCorail Lamothe, Haiti has no reliable source of potable water. The residents must share an untreated, contaminated spring with neighboring communities, and walk five to six hours per day to reach the source. They must use the spring water to drink, cook, wash clothes, bathe and for cultivation. They risk contracting water borne diseases from the contaminated spring due to animal and human waste. EWB-USA ResponseAssessment In October/November 2009, EWB-SCFL traveled to Corail Lamothe for the assessment trip. The team met with the Water Committee comprised of 13 community members to formulate a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Upon evaluation of the current conditions of the village, the team surveyed at least ten existing smaller cisterns/rain catchment systems throughout the village. The systems were in desperate need of rehabilitation. Implementation Rehabilitating the existing structures, including concrete repair, gutter repair, water stops and sealants, will prove an effective, less costly solution to Corail Lamothe’s potable water needs. Slow sand filtration will be provided through a local Haitian non-profit organization, Pure Water for Haiti. Select members of the community will attend a two day training seminar led by Pure Water for Haiti to ensure proper filter use and maintenance. Follwing Up EWB-SCFL has a five year commitment with the community of Corail Lamothe. Subsequent phases include construction of composting latrines, additional filters and a centrally located cistern. Our mission is to build a relationship with and meet the needs of the people in the community through sustainable and reliable engineering methods. Moving ForwardWe are actively fundraising to meet our projected goal of $25,000 for Phase I. The GNI per capita in Haiti is $480. A donation as small as $10 is the equivalent of one week’s salary! Please help us provide the families and children of Corail Lamothe, Haiti with a reliable source of clean, safe potable water.
