| The community of Bayonnais is home to roughly 80,000 people, yet has no medical facility. The nearest hospital is currently an hour's drive away in Gonaives, but the road is often impassable and this facility was destroyed by the hurricanes of 2008. Since 1998, the community has been planning a health clinic by setting aside land and sending locals to University to become doctors, nurses, and other staff. EWB-SFP is designing the architectural layout and structure of the clinic, ensuring that it meets US structural and seismic codes. With no local electricity transmission or sewers to tap into, EWB-SFP is also designing hybrid solar-diesel electric system, and an onsite sewage treatment system. |
