EWB-USA’s Volunteer Engagement Manager, Lisa Helme, is a Dungeons and Dragons buff who feels most at home in a winter wonderland. In the office, she focuses her energy on taking the EWB-USA volunteer experience to the next level!
How did you first learn about and get involved with EWB-USA?
I was researching potential employers that truly valued and practiced integrity, collaboration, service and learning. I reached out to my professional network asking for recommendations and Jaclyn Wilmot, EWB-USA’s Volunteer Engagement Director, responded. After looking further into EWB-USA, I was confident that it was perfectly aligned with my skills, interests and values. I had dancing feet when I heard that I was selected for the role of Volunteer Engagement Manager and could not be prouder to be part of such a passionate group of individuals working to help communities meet their basic human needs.
Tell us about your new role here! Who will you interact with and impact the most?
As part of the Volunteer Engagement team, I will be focusing on the volunteer experience by identifying areas for growth and sustainability. This includes the creation of processes and tools that increase the efficacy and enhance the overall EWB-USA volunteer experience. I will have the opportunity to work closely with the regional volunteer leadership to support their efforts in driving EWB-USA’s mission forward.
What part of your job are you most excited about and why?
It’s a special thing to be a part of someone’s free time, and I’m most excited about helping make the experience for EWB-USA’s volunteers rewarding, impactful and fun.
What does “engineering change” mean to you?
For me, engineering change means using a collaborative, creative and systematic approach to solving humanitarian problems around the world.
How do you spend your free time?
Whether it’s photographing nature, cycling, hiking or skiing, I just enjoy being outside — especially in winter. When I’m not in the office, you can find me working on the house, playing Dungeons and Dragons, sleeping, attempting something crafty or trying to cook. Above all, my absolute favorite thing to do is spend time with the love of my life, my husband, Sean.
