Sustainability Efforts

Building on the work of previous conferences, the goal for 2008 is to make this event the most sustainable to date.  The 2008 Conference will utilize more sustainable processes and establish meaningful benchmarks for future conferences and workshops.  Our ultimate objective is to have a carbon neutral conference.

Following are some of the ways the 2008 EWB-USA International Conference will meet our sustainability goals:

·        Minimize waste generated and provide facilities to maximize recycling and composting

·        Offer local and organic foods when possible

·        Conference materials available on line for individual use

·        Printing on recycled paper with soy based inks whenever possible

·        Conference bags and/or t-shirts will be all cotton with soy based inks

·        Utilize vendors who share similar values and help educate those who are just learning

·        Utilization of hotels that are in walking distance of the conference and which promote sustainability

·        Promote carbon offsets provided by travel groups which mitigate the impacts of air travel

·        Provide buses to the off campus event

·        Encourage the use of public transportation for local travel

A short presentation will be given at the conference on conference sustainability practices.  Victor Yagi, Graduate Program Coordinator, Program on the Environment at the University of Washington, is the conference sustainability coordinator.
